Spreadsheet download safe: official doors only
A safe spreadsheet download starts on GitHub Releases for ONLYOFFICE/DesktopEditors, or on verified winget and Homebrew ids. Anything that renames DesktopEditors_x64.exe for ad ranking is out.
Official doors
Use one of these doors only:
- GitHub Releases asset
DesktopEditors_x64.exe(and matching macOS/Linux assets on the same tag) - winget id
ONLYOFFICE.DesktopEditors - Homebrew cask
onlyoffice
winget install -e --id ONLYOFFICE.DesktopEditors brew install --cask onlyoffice What to reject
Reject Softonic-style “download spreadsheet free” pages that wrap an exe. Reject Drive zips from friends titled as free office setups. Reject browser extensions that claim to install desktop editors.
Reject checksum-only or help-only packages when you meant to install editors. Read the asset name twice.
SmartScreen and Gatekeeper
Windows may show SmartScreen for a new publisher path. Confirm the publisher matches Ascensio / ONLYOFFICE expectations from RESEARCH before you proceed. macOS Gatekeeper may require an Open confirmation for the dmg app.
If the filename does not match DesktopEditors_x64.exe or the verified package id, stop. A spreadsheet install is not worth a mystery binary.
One update door
After the first successful install, keep using the same door. Mixing winget and a random portal exe on one PC creates drift. Document the door on a desk card.
- Open the official source. Releases, winget, or brew only.
- Match the name. DesktopEditors_x64.exe or the verified package id.
- Install once. Finish prompts, then launch.
- Prove a save. Write one local spreadsheet file.
- Bookmark the door. Reuse it for upgrades.

Safe downloads are boring. Boring is the goal. A spreadsheet desk that always uses the same verified door wastes fewer hours than a desk that chases new mirrors every quarter.
Hash checking when your policy requires it
Some IT policies require hash verification. If upstream publishes hashes for a release, verify against those official hashes only. Do not trust a hash pasted on a random forum thread that ranks for spreadsheet download.
When hashes are absent, rely on TLS to GitHub, the signed installer prompts, and the exact filename. Still better than a portal wrapper.
Offline media drops
Air-gapped labs sometimes copy DesktopEditors_x64.exe to USB media. Label the stick with the tag and the filename. Rescan the file on a connected machine before the next drop. A spreadsheet install from unlabeled media is how wrong builds enter locked rooms.
Prefer recreating the USB from GitHub Releases each quarter rather than cloning last year’s stick forever.
Browser download hygiene
Use a normal browser profile without random “download manager” extensions. Save the file to a known folder. Run it from that folder. Delete partial downloads that stopped mid-transfer so you do not launch a truncated exe by mistake.
After install, you can delete the installer or archive it with the tag name for audit. Either habit beats leaving twenty mystery setups on the Desktop.
Teaching juniors the safe door
New hires search spreadsheet and click the first ad. Spend five minutes showing them the Releases URL, the winget id, and the brew cask. That short lesson prevents months of cleanup.
Print a one-page card with the three doors and tape it near the shared finance PC. Physical reminders still beat another Slack scroll.
Linking back to the pillar
When the safe door is clear, return to the spreadsheet home page and use the install panel Copy row. The panel keeps the command in the install panel with a fixed-width Copy label so the layout does not jump when it becomes Copied.
Cluster siblings: releases, GitHub, for this computer.
Checklist before you leave the page
- Confirm the door. Stay on GitHub Releases, winget, or brew only for this spreadsheet path so mirrors never enter the ticket.
- Match the filename. Prefer DesktopEditors_x64.exe on Windows x64 desks and refuse renamed portal setups.
- Prove a save. One local .xlsx workbook is enough evidence that the editors landed correctly.
- Write it down. The next person at the desk should not have to guess which door you used.
Windows
winget ONLYOFFICE.DesktopEditors or DesktopEditors_x64.exe.
macOS
brew cask onlyoffice or the matching dmg.
Linux
AppImage or amd64 deb from the same tag.
Return to the spreadsheet pillar for the Copy row when you are ready to install.
